AS I LEFT home this morning, workmen were installing Christmas decorations on the street lights outside our house.
It seems a little early to be putting up decorations, but I suppose it is only four weeks until Christmas Eve. Our decorations remain in the cupboard.
This year we will be with my family in London for Christmas, but we will most likely put some decorations up for a while before we go, probably next Sunday, the beginning of Advent, the start of the Church’s year, a time of spiritual preparation for Christmas.
For the last couple of years, we have used an Advent wreath at home, so our preparations for Christmas are more than just shopping and wrapping, baking and card writing. Taking a little time together each Sunday evening to light a candle and reflect can help us stay grounded in what’s important to us, not driven by the impossible pressure to have ‘the best Christmas ever!’ that fills our TV screens and our shops at this time of year.
