Human Rights Day: A history of LGBT rights at the UN

10th December is Human Rights Day, marking the 65th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948.

The Declaration states that ‘all people are born free and equal in dignity and rights.’

Yet the UN has only recognised LGBT rights around the world in the last five years.
